Crazy Horse Mountain
12151 Avenue of the Cheifs Custer, SD 57730
Rich in Native American History & Culture. The Black Hills belonged to The native
Americans until forcefully moved to reservations. The Black Hills is considered sacred land
to the Indian people and Crazy Horse Mountain is being sculpted in their honor. They have a
fantastic visitors center which features Native American artists. The Laughing Waters
restaurant has a great lunch menu with great service. |
|
Mount Rushmore National Memorial
13000 Hwy 244
Keystone, SD 57751
Another favorite and must see in the Black Hills is the famous sculpture of four of our
presidents, Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt and Jefferson. When you enter you walk down the avenue
of the flags with all fifty state flags flying high with the sculpture in the distance. There
is a great trail that goes around the base of the monument with stops along the way that
focus on each president. |
 |
Black Hills Playhouse (in Custer State Park): Provides great summertime theator
productions inside custer State Park, a local favorite. |
|
George Mickelson Trail. This is a scenic bike and hiking trail that goes through the beautiful Black Hills from Deadwood in the north south to Edgemont. It originally was the old railroad line. |
Our Favorite Area Restaurants
|
Alpine Inn Main Street Hill City, SD This old Victorian style hotel now features
wonderful lunches with an emphasis on German dishes. The style of the restaurant reminds us of
the German "guest houses" we used to go to when we lived in Germany. Our favorite is their
Ruben sandwiches which comes with a side of their homemade German potato salad. You have to
save room for one of their deserts though as that will be the highlight of you meal! |
Bavarian Inn Restaurant Hwy 16 on the north edge of Custer. The building and cuisine is
authentic German and they serve wonderful German meals, our favorites being their
sauerbratten, beef stroganoff and wiener snitzel. It all comes with a side of red cabbage and
I like to add spatzel to my dinner. They also have great steaks and seafood. |
Captain's Table 220 Mt Rushmore Rd Custer, SDThis is one of our favorite (and our
daughter's) restaurants in Custer. They have a relaxed atmosphere but the steaks and seafood is
wonderful especially with a side of garlic cheddar mashed potatoes! They also have outside
dining when the weather is mild. |
Wrangler Cafe 302 Mt Rushmore RdThis is the "locals" favorite. It burned down last
year and has been rebuilt and opening just in time for the tourist season. They have great
breakfast & lunch and you're bound to run into someone you know! |
Hitchin Rail Pringle, SDIf you want a true taste of the old west you have got to stop
here. The building has the rails & posts out front for tying up your horse. Inside you'll
find some trophy elk and other game adorning the walls. We go often for their great omelets
in the morning, a buffalo burger for lunch and at night they serve a mean prime rib
dinner. |
Lodging
|
Custer has many motels in town, but only two are open off season. |
Super 8 535 W Mt Rushmore Rd 605-673-2200The Super 8 is open all year. They have very reasonable
rates, clean room and a friendly staff. I stayed there a number of times while we were
getting ready to move out here and build. |
Bavarian Inn Hwy 16/385 605-673-2802
Another great place to stay is at the Bavarian Inn which is open most of the year. They have a continental breakfast and the restaurant on the grounds. What you will especially like is its wooded setting on the edge of
town where you'll be sure to spot some of the local deer! |
A newer motel in town is the Comfort Inn & Suites for a bit more upscale stay. It is
on the west edge of town near the golf course. 605-673-3221, |
We also have a brand new Holiday Inn Express on the west edge of town.
1-605-673-2500 |
If you would rather stay in a cabin while in town there are a number of places we would
recommend. |
Rock Crest Lodge & Cabins 15 Mt Rushmore Rd. 1-605-673-4323
They have motel rooms as well as individualized cabins in different sizes to accommodate your family. They are also
right by a great mini golf place, a favorite of our grandchildren's, and no it's not that
easy! |
If you'd like to stay in Custer State Park there are several beautiful old lodges where
you will also find some fantastic dining and a great deal of wildlife including freeroaming
buffalo. |
Legion Lake Lodge: 605-255-4521, US Hwy 16A |
State Game Lodge: 605-255-4541, US Hwy 16A |
Sylvan Lake Lodge (our favorite!!), 605-574-2561, US Hwy 16A |
On the edge of town is a great old Victorian home, Custer Mansion, which is a B&B.
Each room is carefully furnished with period decor and the owners are the best!
605-673-3333 |
As for other recreation we have the bike trails, Custer State Park, Wind Cave National
Park, Jewel Cave National Park, a great golf course and horse back riding. Living here is
like being on vacation all the time!!! |
