The Custer Area
We are located in the beautiful Black Hills region of South Dakota in
a quaint town of Custer. The population is approximately 1500 but the county has 8,676
residents as many people live in the surrounding area. The medium age is 42 and we're finding that many people are relocating here for
retirement or a second home. The air is fresh and the weather is mild. Our winters are
typically mild for the Midwest and because our elevation is well over 5,000 feet our summers
are very comfortable especially in the evenings. We also have a low humidity level year round
and very few bugs to deal with.
We do have quite a few species of wildlife in our area including deer, elk, turkey,
buffalo, eagle & cougars. It is a very natural area with a large portion of it protected by
the Black Hills National Forest Service. We have miles of bike trails going from the northern
hills to the southern hills. There are many trails for walking and four wheeling. We have many
streams & lakes to try your favorite form of fishing. We happen to especially enjoy fly
fishing for trout.
There are many small towns scattered throughout the hills with quaint shops, great
eating and much history. If you enjoy winter sports there are abundant resorts in the northern
hills. We have many great places to see very close to us. Crazy Horse Mountain is just a 5
minute drive from Custer with a great Native American History display. It is one of the largest
mountain sculptors in the world. Mount Rushmore is about a half hour drive which still gives me
chills at it's beauty and symbol of our nation.
Custer State Park is right by Custer with several old Lodges which offer rooms and
dining, our favorite being Sylvan Lake Lodge. There are many scenic drives through the park
where you will encounter the wildlife.
Living in the area we have some of our favorite restaurants including the Sage Creek
Grille, Alpine Inn, Bavarian Inn and the Wrangler for the locals which is currently being
rebuilt after a fire last year. We have several banks, gas stations, hardware stores and a
small general goods store as well as 2 grocery stores to meet all our daily needs. The people
are great, the area is beautiful and the weather is great! What's stopping you from making this
your home too?
